Margin vs markup, what is the difference?

They are easy to mix up, and mixing them up costs you money. Markup is your profit as a percentage of what the item cost you. Margin is your profit as a percentage of what you sold it for. A product that costs $60 and sells for $100 has a $40 profit, a 40 percent margin, and a 66.7 percent markup. Same dollars, two very different percentages.

How to use it

Enter your cost price and sale price. The calculator shows your profit in dollars, your margin, and your markup at once. Use it to check that a discount still leaves you a healthy margin, or to set a price that hits a target margin.

Why it matters

If you price off markup but think in margin, you can quietly erode your profit. Knowing both on every product, and factoring in the full landed cost of getting stock on your shelf, is how you protect your bottom line. Our inventory tools track true landed cost so your margins are real, not guesses.

Tip: Countova shows margin and markup on every product and order using your real costs, including freight and duty, so you always know what you are actually making.
